Crystal Slipper: When Lagos glittered for Theatre

Thespian Family Theatre has remained on track in its quest to bring stage plays back to life in Nigeria.

Over the weekend, theatre lovers were treated to a star-studded stage play, the “CRYSTAL SLIPPER”.

It was indeed 'theatre unusual', as it featured a rich cast of thespians such as Van Vicker, Gideon Okeke, Iyke Okechukwu, Florence Okechukwu, Shafi Akinrimisi, Nedu of WazobiaFM, Adesua Etomi and a host of other celebrities.

Crystal Slipper was a stage play based on an adaptation of a well-known fairy tale to our Nigerian setting  and culture.

Sewa (Adesua Etomi), the protagonist, was the daughter of a rich and caring father, Tunji (Gideon Okeke), who did everything to please his loving daughter after she lost her mother.

Life, as they say is not a bed of roses; Sewa experienced life in a good, bad and ugly way, when Tunji found love in the eyes of Atolani (Shafi Akinrimisi) and took her in as his wife.

Things were never the same for Tunji’s 'sunshine' (Sewa) as she had to deal with a wicked step mother  and two mean step-sisters (Lala Akindoju and Florence Okechukwu), who were spoilt brats.

Although, things seemed hopeless for Sewa;  Feri, the maid, was the only bleak hope that always put a smile on her face in times of distress.

Sewa, however, had a bloom in fate when a charming musician, Van Vicker, smoothly crept into her life.

Maliki (Iyke Okechukwu) and Ojemba ('Nedu' Chinedu Emmanuel) were the clowns of the play who always left the audience laughing at every scene of their appearance.

Crystal Sipper was a play dedicated to helping the Oluwakemi Memorial Foundation (OMF) in creating awareness of asthma and the need for a structured asthma management plan for children in Africa.

It was bumper packed with music, drama, and humour; also featuring live performances from Van Vicker, Kryptic kidz and a dance crew.

The audience was thoroughly thrilled as this event surely redefined theatre.

Here is what some of the guests had to say;

“This is something I've never witnessed before. I've been to theatre plays but this was different. I wish everyone could see this play" - AyoadeOgunkoya

“It was worth all my time. Awesome, beautiful and a very creative production. I am still speechless” – Ada Lewis-Egbosi

“Great show! Dramatic! Didactic!! And Hilarious!!! I thoroughly enjoyed myself! Kudos to the organisers” – Thecla Wilkie

“It was the biggest stage show I’ve ever seen” – Jennifer Yussuf

It was really good! I laughed so hard at the acts of Scholastica, Feri, Ojemba and Maliki. Crystal Slipper made my day” – Makida Moka

It was an exceptional play as promised. Theatre lovers will not in a hurry forget this really creative masterpiece.

The play was written by Ayo Jaiyesimi and Directed by Abiola Segun-Williams.
